Learning Day Service
Cali was created to give school leavers and young adults with a severe to profound intellectual disability a place where they could continue to learn, grow and develop supported by the care and therapy supports they need. It provides a programme where these adults can engage in lifelong learning to maximise their knowledge, skills, independence and ability to engage more fully with their communities. It also enables them to lead more happy and fulfilled lives of their choosing.
Learning + Care + Therapy
Cali provides a formal Further Education programme for young adults with a severe to profound intellectual disability.
This education programme is being rolled out with support from the Education and Training Board (ETB).We deliver both formal learning modules with personal goals and measures integrated with 'soft learning' and reinforcement during all activities both at Cali and while we are out and about in the community.
Our curriculum covers a wide range of subjects including communications, literacy, numeracy, science and life skills. All learning modules are specially adapted and developed to support the learning level of our students.Students benefit from being in small pods of 5 with one-to-one facilitator supports and a class tutor which allows students to participate fully in all classes and activities.
-
Our learners differ in their range and need of care supports.
Some need total support with things like personal care and mealtimes, while others need little to no support.
Some Cali students need help to mobilise safely either when walking, using 'walkers' or wheelchairs.
Some students have medical needs such as PEG feeds and the administration of both regular and emergency medications.
-
Every individual's needs are different and care supports are assessed and a bespoke care plan is developed for each young adult.
Our Cali facilitators are trained in providing care, medical and learning supports to our students to enable them to engage fully in their education programme and activities. Cali adheres to the HSE's New Directions policy.
-
Cali students benefit from access to Physiotherapy, Speech and Language Therapy, AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication: 'talker' devices, PECs (Picture Exchange Communication System) and Lámh (sign language for people with an intellectual disability), Occupational Therapy and Behavioural Therapy.
Each individual's therapy needs are assessed and a programme of supports put in place.
Group therapy sessions are also conducted to address common needs within the Cali pod.
-
Therapists provide training support to the facilitators working with the young adults so that there is a consistency of therapy supports at all times so as to maximise outcomes.
Cali also offers other therapies such as Aqua Therapy (conducted by our
physiotherapists), Therapeutic Horse Riding, Dance and Brain Groove and Music Therapy. The therapy supports optimise outcomes for the young adults and provide a very enriching environment.
